Local government sources revealed plans to build the world's largest solar power station in Dunhuang City, Gansu province. This project will dwarf the current biggest solar power plant which, according to CNet, is the the Gut Erlasee Solar Park, a 12-megawatt facility located near Arnstein, Germany.

The city government has signed a letter of intent with the Zhonghao New Energy Investment (Beijing) Co., Ltd. The solar power plant, which will generate 100-megawatts of power will cost around 6.03 billion yuan (600 million euros) and will take five years to build.

Dunhuang, which covers an area of 31,200 square meters, receives over 3,362 hours of sunshine every year, making it the ideal area for solar energy development. The area also has easy access to electricity transmission and communications.
