The character hăo consists of a woman 女 (nǚ) and a child 子 (zĭ). A woman with a child is considered good. Being a mother 母 (mŭ) is thus an important role for a woman in traditional Chinese society. The character for mother 母 depicts a woman, with the two dots depicting her breasts.
