This character consists of a "woman" 女 (nǚ) under a "roof" 宀 (mián).
When the lady is in the house, there is "peace". This just might imply, that in traditional Chinese society, women were not supposed to be active outside the house, but just be happy minding domestic business.
To underline the above statement, Chinese men can still today refer to their wives as “the lovely one who is at home / inside the house” 贤内 (xián nèi).
