"China's point that it has taken measures in line with the arms embargo's requirements to stop its weapons from going to Darfur is meaningless." BBC
This week, China faced allegations by BBC investigative reporters that it had sold military equipment to Sudan, defying an arms embargo imposed by the UN in 2005 and fueling the conflict in the embattled Darfur region. Chinese authorities wasted no time reacting to the accusations, denying any contribution to the continuation of violence in the African state. Did China violate the arms embargo?
The BBC reported early this week that a group of its journalists had uncovered evidence that China had sold military trucks and anti-airplane guns to the country and provided training to pilots flying Chinese fighter jets. The same news was repeated in a number of media sources across the globe. The BBC has powerful evidence that China has been breaking the embargo, The Star writes. According to AFP, a UN panel of experts has asked to examine the evidence gathered by the journalists.
China reacted to the accusations by firmly denying ever having violated a UN ban on arms to Darfur, the BBC writes. CRI Nordic reports of former Chinese diplomat Dai Yan saying that China alone cannot be blamed for fueling the conflict in Darfur as Western countries have also supplied arms to Africa. According to the Sudan Tribune, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang also reiterated that China has never exported arms to a country or region under embargo. Sudanese presidential adviser Mustafa Ismail has defended China, saying that its actions in Sudan have had a positive impact on the peace process, a China Daily report says.
However, after all the commotion China may not technically be in breach of the embargo because it has urged the Sudanese government not to allow the equipment to go to the Darfur region, the Daily Mail says. In addition, the same source cites a Chinese official as underlining that the arms embargo only applies to Darfur, not to Sudan.
