Olympic security taken to the max

"Security preparations for the Olympics have been finished, and we are fully prepared to prevent and deal with all security threats. The Chinese government and people have the confidence and ability to ensure a safe Olympics." CRI Nordic

"Beijing has called terrorism the single biggest threat to the Games." MSNBC

With the start of the Olympic Games just little over a month away, Beijing is cranking up security enforcement primarily for fear of terrorist attacks emanating from within its own borders. But will thousands of trained security personnel and high-tech gadgetry be enough to ensure the safety of the Games?

In an attempt to thwart any possible terrorist attacks, Beijing has issued a series of bans and regulations designed to restrict the use and transportation of dangerous objects and substances in the proximity of the Olympic venues. In addition, a conduct guide was issued for foreigners in Beijing for the Games to inform them of what is regarded as delinquent behavior, CRI Nordic reports. The guidelines prohibit, among others, camping near the Olympic sites, and engaging in illegal behavior such as terrorism, Bloomberg says. At the Beijing international airport, double fences will be built and even the manholes around the complex will be blocked to ensure utmost safety, according to China Daily. Explosive-sniffing dogs will also be working around the venues in the Olympic cities, according to the International Herald Tribune.

The greatest responsibility of managing Beijing's anti-terrorism activities falls on the shoulders of Yang Huanning, an expert appointed to ensure a trouble-free Olympic Games, China Daily reports. Yang and the Olympic organizers are mainly worried about terrorist threats coming from inside rather than outside the Chinese borders, Reuters says. So far, Chinese authorities have foiled three terrorist plots by Xinjiang separatists targeting the Games, AP writes. According to Interpol chief Ronald Noble, there is nothing more that China could do to prevent terrorism during the Games, Reuters writes.
