Chinese President Hu Jintao traveled to Japan this week on a mission to re-establish ties after five years without high-level exchanges. Is this a new starting point for Sino-Japanese relations?
The warm ambiance of the visit was highlighted from the get-go with China offering to lease two giant pandas to Japan for joint research, according to Xinhua. On the second day of the visit, President Hu Jintao and Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda signed a historical joint statement, with focus on the promotion of Sino-Japanese relations and world peace, the BBC writes. The two heads of state also agreed to set up a mechanism for regular visits between leaders of the two countries, CRI Nordic writes. According to a statement from Japan's foreign ministry, the two sides are also expected to sign a joint statement on climate change before the end of Hu Jintao's five-day visit, Al Jazeera writes. However, any major agreements on key divisive issues, such historical events or the East China Sea gas field are not to be expected, CNN speculates.
The nature of the presidential visit shows that Japan and China have started to put more emphasis on their specific national interests, rather than on philosophical issues, Japan Today writes. This view is echoed by Mainichi Daily News in an article saying that China is well aware of how vital it is to strengthen ties with Japan in order to achieve its goal of a harmonious society. Is this the start of a new era in Sino-Japanese relations?
