“(A)s long as both sides look into the future and make unremitting efforts, China and Britain will certainly be able to transcend the differences in historical traditions, social systems, and economic development levels, and forge a comprehensive strategic partnership...” Hu Jintao on CRI
“There are issues here – albeit issues Mr Brown and his entourage will say they dealt with but which the rest of us still need resolving.” Liverpool Daily Post
Bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and China date back to the 1950s. The height of cooperation came, though, in 1997 when the British handed its colony, Hong Kong, over to Chinese rule. What effect will China's economic development have on the relationship between these two countries?
Gordon Brown was in Beijing for his first official visit as British Prime Minister this month. Details of his visit are in a special report by CRI. At the top of Brown's agenda, according to The Times, is trade. Brown hopes that increased trade with China would translate to more jobs for the British people, The Telegraph reports. The Liverpool Daily Post warns, though, that Brown's eagerness to attract Chinese investment might cause him to overlook some important issues.
Brown also wanted to raise the issue of climate change during his visit, praising Chinese efforts to address the problem after his visit to the world's first eco-city being constructed near Shanghai, ABC Australia said. Climate change is a cause close to the Prime Minister's heart, as his government has proposed the world's first climate change law, a Reuters report said.
How China's mammoth development will affect Sino-British relations is still unclear. On the one hand, more trade could mean more investment and higher employment. On the other hand, more development could lead to even more environmental degradation. Will China and the UK be able to solve this dilemma?
