The 17th National Congress: Paving the way for China's next leaders

“People's democracy is the lifeblood of socialism.” Hu Jintao on CRI Nordic

“The 17th party congress is the focus of a Darwinian struggle over the future leadership of the Communist Party and therefore of China...”

Members of the Communist Party of China meet once every five years in a national congress. Since it was first convened in 1921 up to the present day, the National Congress of the Communist Party of China remains the most important gathering of the country's leaders. What issues are being discussed during the 17th National Congress?

About 2,200 delegates representing more than 73 million Communist Party members are in Beijing for the Congress. It opened in Beijing on 15th October and will continue until 21st October. CRI Nordic has a special report, updated daily, on the most newsworthy aspects of the National Congress.

One of the main purposes for holding the Congress is to elect members of the Central Committee, a process which a Xinhua report takes a look at. While Hu Jintao is expected to maintain his post as Party leader, the search for his successor has begun, and Voice of America focuses on two of the most likely candidates.

Leading a country as vast as China is a challenge. Especially given the country's growing role in global growth and development. What course will the National Congress take? What path will China's leadership follow?
