At the beginning of every year, it's traditional to examine the highlights and low points of the year just past.
In this special edition of World Viewpoints, Radio86 takes a look at the year that was in China. Here are the top five news stories that dominated headlines in 2009:
China turns 60. October 1, 2009 marked the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. CRI has a special report that traces the country's rise. The country celebrated on a grand scale, showcasing the biggest military review in its history, according to CBC. Were the celebrations meant to show the world that a new superpower has arrived?
China's economic growth. While the rest of the world was trying to limit the effects of the financial crisis, China's economy was expanding. A People's Daily report points out that China, despite expectations to the contrary, met its target of 8 percent growth in 2009. The forecast for this year looks rosier, as China becomes the world's largest exporter, overtaking Germany, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The Xinjiang riots. On July 5, violence flared in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, claiming over a hundred lives, Xinhua reports. In the aftermath of the riots, blamed on Uighur separatists, courts handed out death sentences, the latest of which were announced on December 23, Yahoo! News reports. According to a top Xinjiang official cited by Reuters, maintaining stability in the region will be a long-term struggle.
A/H1N1 scare. Fears that the A/H1N1 virus would cause the same havoc that SARS did saw China taking preemptive steps to limit the effects of the disease. In 2009, China inoculated almost 50 million people against swine flu, in the largest immunization campaign in the world, an official told AFP. China still hasn't let its guard down, as it called for more vigilance against the spread of the virus with the coming Chinese New Year, Metro News reports.
China's role in the global climate change fight. In the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen last December, China's role in the global fight against climate change was called into question. After the talks, which led to a non-binding agreement, came charges that China blocked the negotiations, the Financial Times reports. China has denied the accusations and maintains that the Copenhagen Conference was a significant step in combating climate change.
