China wins Olympics – in mathematics

The Chinese contestants proved to be the brightest, when 535 participants from 101 countries and regions gathered at the 49th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

When the games concluded on Monday, the Chinese team finished first and the Russian team and US team finished second and third respectively, CRI writes.

Xiong Bin, head of the Chinese delegation, told Xinhua that the Chinese team's achievement this year was remarkable as Chen Zhuo, the first female Chinese competitor since 1996, together with her four male teammates, won five individual gold medals.

The Spanish Crown Prince Felipe de Borbon y Grecia, his wife Letizia Ortiz and the Spanish minister of Education gave the young Chinese brains their medals at the closing ceremony.

IMO is an annual six-problem, 42-point mathematical competition for young people, mainly high school students.
