"Forbidden Kingdom," the first team-up for martial arts superstars Jet Li and Jackie Chan, was the number one movie in North America on its debut weekend.
Preliminary reports released on Sunday showed that the film had box office receipts totaling 20.9 million USD (13.17 million euros) over a three-day period.
The film, jointly released by Lionsgate and Weinstein Co., tells the story of a modern American teenager who goes back in time to ancient China. He is given the task of freeing the Monkey king with the help of kung fu masters played by Li and Chan.
