Wang Hao became China's third male athlete to win a medal in the history of the World Championships after taking the silver in the 20km walk in Berlin on Saturday.
Wang's silver medal is China's third medal in the World Championships in Berlin.
Wang was overwhelmed by his silver medal. After finishing fourth in the Olympics in Beijing last year he didn't expect to get any medal at all.
”I have been training very well this year however, and the weather circumstances here in Berlin were perfect,” Wang told CRI.
The young athlete was extra happy because of the good timing.
”Tomorrow is my 20th birthday. This is the best birthday present ever,” he said.
The race was tough with Wang and Olympic gold medalist, Russian, Valeriy Borchin in the lead most of the time. At 17 km the Russian pulled away.
Borchin won the gold by finishing on 1:18:41. Wang came second on 1:19:06, his second best time ever.
It was a good day in the World Championships for China. Liu Hong won bronze in the women's 20km walk.
