Hangzhou woos foreign tourists

Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, is one of China's top tourist destinations. The city of tea and silk, Hangzhou has for many centuries been one of the centers of Chinese culture. It is also known as the city of romance because of the love stories associated with the West Lake. However, the city receives only about 2.4 million foreign visitors yearly, prompting the local government to launch programs to attract more tourists from abroad.

One man's passion for the bridges of Taishun

Taishun in Zhejiang, China, is home to as many as 900 corridor bridges known as fengyuqiao or “wind and rain bridges.” The beauty of the corridor bridges has touched one man in particular. Mr. Zhou Wangong is already 81 but he has dedicated himself to telling people about these manmade wonders.

The art of Wang Dongling

The sound of the Hangzhou Symphony Orchestra might not seem different from other orchestras around the world. But one look at the young and eager faces of the musicians and a conductor who's under 30 will make you realize that this is not just any orchestra.


Bamboo tales  

The city of Hangzhou is famous all over China for its bamboo groves. Every year, over half a million people from all over China and the rest of the world come to the Hangzhou Botanical Garden, where a seven-hectare bamboo garden is located. The Bamboo Garden has over 100 of the 400 bamboo species that grow in China. Zeng Xinyu, senior engineer and researcher at the Hangzhou Botanical Garden, gave a special tour of the Bamboo Garden and told us about this amazing plant.

Zhejiang, on the eastern coast of China, has the fourth highest GDP in the country. Not only is Zhejiang an economic powerhouse, it is also home to some of the most beautiful places in the country.

It is perhaps best known for the West Lake area in Hangzhou, home of the famous Xihu Longjing tea. The breathtaking scenery has inspired the famous Chinese saying, "Above is heaven, below is Hangzhou."
